Search Booking.com for a Makkah hotel for the last ten nights of Ramadan 1448 — 27 February 2027 — and something strange happens. Most of the famous towers around the Haram do not come back with a price. They come back with a sentence: “This property is unavailable on our site for your dates.”
We checked all ten of the largest Makkah hotels on 24 August 2026, eighteen months ahead. 7 of the 10 returned no rooms at all.
Update, 7 September 2026 — third reading
Nothing has changed. Still the same seven of ten Makkah hotels showing no rooms for 27 February 2027, and the three that are bookable have now quoted identical rates on all three readings, to the dollar: Conrad Jabal Omar $1,654, DoubleTree Jabal Omar $870, Mercure Makkah Aziziah $78.
City-wide, Mecca has crept from 82 to 87 to 91 bookable properties for that night. Booking.com’s banner has read 78–79% unavailable at every reading. Ninety-one is still only 42% of the 217 properties bookable for an ordinary November night in the same city.
The contrast that matters: over the same three weeks, Makkah’s winter window (28 December 2026) moved for the first time — up 1.7% like-for-like, with Conrad up $67 and DoubleTree up $26. Rates that are actually on sale are starting to move. Ramadan 2027 has not moved at all, because most of it is not on sale. Full weekly figures on the Umrah hotel price index.

Three hotels had rooms. Conrad Jabal Omar at $1,654, DoubleTree Jabal Omar at $870, and Mercure Aziziah — a shuttle ride out — at $78. City-wide, Booking.com returned 82 bookable properties in Mecca for that night, against 206 for an ordinary night in November and 190 for the December holidays. Booking’s own banner on the Ramadan search reads: “79% of places to stay are unavailable for your dates on our site.”
Madinah tells you what is really going on
If Ramadan simply sold out, Madinah should look the same. It does not. Medina returns 476 bookable properties for the same Ramadan night and 595 for November — barely a dent.
And yet every one of the five central, mosque-facing Madinah hotels we track showed no inventory at all for a routine night in November, while 595 other Medina properties were bookable that same night. The city is not full. The branded hotels beside the Prophet’s Mosque are simply not selling through this channel.
That is the clearest evidence we have that these blanks are about distribution — which channel a hotel chooses to sell through — and not about demand.
Why “sold out” is the wrong word
It is tempting to read this as evidence that Ramadan sells out eighteen months ahead. Be careful. Booking.com’s wording is precise, and it does not say sold out. It says unavailable on our site.
Those are different claims. A hotel shows this either because its rooms are genuinely gone, or because it gives Booking.com no allocation for that date and sells it another way — through Saudi tour operators, through Nusuk Masar, or as part of packages that never touch a Western booking site.
The case that settles it
If demand were the whole explanation, a hotel should be harder to book in Ramadan than in a quiet month. Conrad Jabal Omar does the opposite. It shows no inventory for an ordinary Sunday in November 2026, and is bookable for the last ten nights of Ramadan 2027.
A hotel cannot be more sold out in November than in Ramadan. Whatever is driving the blanks, it is not simply demand — and anyone telling you these hotels are “already sold out” is reading more into the page than it says.
What this means if you are planning
- Do not panic-book at any price. The absence of a listing is not proof that rooms are gone. It may only mean Booking.com is not the channel selling them.
- Check the hotel directly. Brand sites frequently hold inventory that OTAs do not show. For central Makkah in Ramadan this is the rule rather than the exception.
- Look at Nusuk Masar. Saudi Arabia’s official platform sells packages that include hotels which never appear on Western booking sites.
- Price the shuttle tier honestly. Mercure Aziziah at $78 versus Conrad at $1,654 is a 21× difference for the same night. That gap is far wider in Ramadan than at any other time.
- Treat any “book now, only 2 left” urgency with suspicion on dates this far out.
What we still do not know
We do not know whether these hotels will release inventory closer to the date, and if so, when and at what price. We do not know whether the ones showing rooms today will get more expensive or less. This is a single reading taken on one day.

How we checked
Each hotel was searched individually by name on Booking.com on 24 August 2026 for check-in 27 February 2027, one night, two adults, one room, prices in USD excluding tax, browsing from outside Saudi Arabia. Where a hotel returned no price we searched it a second time by its exact listing name to rule out a spelling mismatch before recording it as unavailable. Two hotels were re-checked a third time because their prices looked anomalous; both were confirmed.
